Mr. Valry "Val" Spence Jr.

Valry Denson Spence, Jr. was born on April 2, 1952, in Camden, North Carolina, to the late Valry Denson Spence, Sr. and Lucy Barnard Spence. He was united in holy matrimony to the love of his life, Regina Catherine Spence, and together they shared 54 beautiful years of marriage. Their enduring love served as the foundation of a strong, faithful, and devoted family. Valry was a dedicated and loyal employee of the City of Newport News, where he faithfully served for 33 years. Through hard work, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, he rose through the ranks to earn the respected title of Master Equipment Operator. He took immense pride in his work and in serving his community with integrity. In 2022, he retired, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism, dedication, and respect among his colleagues and friends. A man full of life, style, and song, Valry was known for his sharp appearance and vibrant personality. He took great pride in dressing well and especially enjoyed shopping for suits and shoes that reflected his unmistakable sense of style. His presence was memorable, and his spirit unforgettable. Music was deeply woven into Valry’s life. Rarely without a melody in his heart, he loved to sing and often filled rooms with joy, peace, and happiness through his voice. His love for gospel music extended beyond enjoyment into ministry. In April 2005, he founded the gospel group “Val Spence and the Family Aires,” which included four of his 13-year-old granddaughters: Shacoria Spence, TyRonda Spence, Aneka Spence, and the late LaQuesha Spence. Through this ministry, Valry shared his faith, nurtured young talent, and created lasting memories that will resonate for generations to come. Valry peacefully transitioned into eternal rest on February 13, 2026, at the age of 73. He leaves to cherish his loving memory his devoted wife, Regina Catherine Spence; his seven children: Valry Spence, LaKechia Barco, Michelle Spence, Debbie Spence, Tina Spence, Shelton Spence, and Trudena Spence; his grandchildren, beginning with Jucentae LaChe Spence, who made him a grandfather on May 25, 1991, followed by sixteen additional grandchildren; his great-grandchildren, beginning with Trinicia Mone Spence, who made him a great-grandfather on April 16, 2008, followed by thirty additional great-grandchildren; and one beloved brother, Roosevelt Spence (Joyce) of Elizabeth City, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, James Earl Spence and Willie Spence (Dorothy); his grandson, JaQuan Spence; and his granddaughter, LaQuesha Spence. Though he has departed this earthly life, his legacy of love, faith, music, and devotion will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
